The EU, unlike other international actors, has no hidden agenda or hidden interests related to the situation in the South Caucasus. This was stated Tuesday by Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, during the European Parliament debates on the situation created by Azerbaijan's blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh, answering the question of Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Anna Fotyga (Poland) about Russia's role in the region.

"We [i.e. the EU] are only interested in ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region. But Russia's attack on Ukraine has had a long-term and negative impact, both politically and economically, at the regional global level and especially in the South Caucasus," Borrell said.

According to him, "the current concentration of Russia in the war against Ukraine has a significant impact" on the geopolitical balance of the South Caucasus.

"You know that Armenia, as a member of the CSTO, the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization, applied to the CSTO for military support in September 2022, when there was a military escalation [of tension]. But Armenia did not receive any support either from Russia or CSTO. But we also know that Russian peacekeeping troops are stationed in Karabakh, under an agreement with the government of Azerbaijan, and this is certainly an important aspect of Russia's role in this conflict," said the EU foreign policy chief.
