Based on the results of two visits, the UN mission did not see the destruction of civilian infrastructure in Stepanakert due to shelling by Azerbaijan.
According to Azerbaijani media, “the UN mission for the coordination of humanitarian affairs completed a week-long mission to Azerbaijan and Armenia to identify the urgent needs of people in the Karabakh region, as well as refugees in Armenia.”
The mission was led by Director of the Coordination Division Ramesh Rajasingham, accompanied by UN Resident Coordinator Vladanka Andreeva and representatives of UN agencies in Karabakh.
“Civilian infrastructure and homes – such as schools, the main hospital, and apartment buildings – appeared intact. The mission did not visit any rural villages during this first trip, but these areas will be visited in the coming days and weeks,” reads a press release by the agency.
On September 19-20, Azerbaijan carried out another aggression against Nagorno-Karabakh. The capital Stepanakert was subjected to massive artillery shelling. The city's population spent more than 24 hours in shelters and basements.
