YEREVAN. – It is difficult to draw common lessons from the referendum in Scotland, as in each case the principles of territorial integrity and self-determination of peoples to some extent contradict each other, UK Ambassador said.

Each case, Katherine Leach believes, should have its own solution. For example, in case of Scotland, they managed to hold a referendum since the parties were ready to accept results calmly.

“But a referendum on independence in Northern Ireland is out of the question at the moment: there is an agreement reached in 1998, which states that if once the people of Northern Ireland will decide to hold a referendum, this can be done,” she added.

However, the two communities of the Norther Ireland have completely different approaches on the status.

“They understand that time is needed to bring peace,” the diplomat added.

During the September 18 referendum, 55.3 percent of the Scottish voters rejected independence and voted for being a part of the UK.
