YEREVAN. – Time has already come to secure an Armenian peacekeeping presence in the Middle East, and it is expedient to do this as part of the Italian contingent.

The Defense Minister of Armenia, Seyran Ohanyan, on Wednesday specifically noted the aforesaid in his remarks during the Armenian peacekeepers’ official send-off to Lebanon.

As reported earlier, a 32-member peacekeeping unit from Armenia traveled to Lebanon on Wednesday evening, and with an Italian Air Force plane, and already arrived in the place of its deployment.

As part of the Italian contingent, the Armenian unit will participate in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission and, as such, it will implement security at the local UN military township.

Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan and Italian Ambassador Giovanni Ricciulli were on hand at the official send-off for these peacekeepers.

Armenian peacekeepers take part in international peacekeeping missions since 2004, and they currently carry out such missions in Afghanistan and Kosovo.
