YEREVAN. – The public transport fare in Armenia’s capital city of Yerevan needs be at least 300 drams (approx. $0.59), instead of the current 100 drams (approx. $0.20). The public transport route “owners,” however, do not require the passengers to pay the full amount, but rather the Municipality to recompense 200 drams (approx. $0.39).

The Chairman of the Union of Passenger Transport Companies of Armenia, Hrant Yeghiazaryan, stated about the above-said at a press conference on Thursday.

He recalled that the expert, who was invited to Armenia back in December of the year past, had calculated and subsequently informed that the fare needs to be 252 drams (approx. $0.49). But, as per Yeghiazaryan, the most recent vehicle natural gas price hike shows that the fare needs to be no less than 300 drams.

“[But] the problem should be solved in a civilized way. The authorities will have to pay a part of this amount, and the passengers, the other part; that is, the government will have to subsidize at least the 200 drams,” Yeghiazaryan said.

Several Yerevan public transport vehicle drivers have taken to the streets since early Thursday morning, and they are demanding a reassessment of the vehicle natural gas price. They state that, otherwise, they will continue to strike.
