YEREVAN. – The setting up of a new council to fight against corruption in Armenia may solely pursue the objective of attracting the attention of international organizations and being window dressing, since it is an independent body, it does not have respective powers, and has no impact on decisions.

Opposition Heritage Party National Assembly Faction Secretary Tevan Poghosyan, Transparency International Anti-Corruption Center NGO Executive Director Varuzhan Hoktanyan, and Yerevan Anti-Corruption Center Coordinator Marat Atovmyan came to the aforesaid conclusion at a discussion on Tuesday.

“Political will is needed for an effective fight against corruption,” Poghosyan added.

According to the speakers, the problem is that the mechanisms, by which the activities of the council will be managed and overseen, are not clearly noted.

“An independent anti-corruption agency, whose activities will be transparent for the society, needs to be created in Armenia. Otherwise, the new council will again be of imitating nature,” Atovmyan said, for his part.
