YEREVAN. – Now is a favorable time to implement constitutional reforms in Armenia, since there are no respective hindrances in terms of election cycles and politics.

Member of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia National Assembly (RPA NA) Faction, Levon Martirosyan, stated the above-said at a press conference on Monday.

“The constitutional reforms are indispensable to us all,” said Martirosyan. “They are being implemented now because now is the most favorable period of time for these important amendments to be brought to fruition.”

The RPA MP, however, expressed a view that even though the current draft constitutional amendments are a step forward, making a transition to a parliamentary system of governance is risky for Armenia.

Nonetheless, Levon Martirosyan noted that the most important provisions in this constitutional reform are making the aforementioned transition, and the substantial lessening in the powers of the President.

The ruling party deputy expressed the hope that the constitutional reform will have a positive impact also on the establishment of Armenia’s internal political forces.

The new draft Constitution has been forwarded to the NA. The respective parliamentary debates are expected to get underway during its first four-day fall session. And as per National Assembly President Galust Sahakyan, the constitutional referendum should be conducted in late September.
