YEREVAN. – The bone of a millennia-old bison (European forest buffalo) was discovered in Armenia’s Lake Sevan, about six to seven meters below the water surface.

Head of the Scuba Diving Department at Armenia’s “Ayas” Nautical Research Club, Rafayel Mkrtchyan, informed the abovementioned at a press conference on Wednesday.

“During research [at the Sevan Basin] we have discovered many archaeological findings in the form of remnants of household items,” said Mkrtchyan. “But this bone is unique.”

In the words of biologist Nina Manaseryan, a special DNA test should be conducted to have a detailed insight on this finding, whereupon, however, the bone may completely decompose.

“Bison remains have never been found in the region,” noted Manaseryan. “According to preliminary data, it could be a tens-of-thousands-of-year-old finding.”

Artak Elmasanyan, an instructor at the aforesaid department, added that they believe there may be other skeletons at the bottom of Lake Sevan, and a special professional team should be set up to find them.
