President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan today attended the 21st UN Conference of the Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP21) presided by France.

The global conference was attended by 150 states and government leaders, as well as thousands of delegates. Before passing to the agenda, the delegations of the Paris conference observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the November 13 Paris Attacks.

In the opening speech, President of France Francois Hollande, French FM Laurant Fabius presiding over the conference, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, UK Prince Charles and other speakers stressed the significance of the conference for the Planet Earth and the entire humanity.

President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan also made an address at the conference. He thanked his French counterpart Francois Hollande for the excellent organization of the summit despite the terror attacks which struck Paris and the entire civilized humanity several days ago.

Sargsyan stressed that the climate change poses equal threat to all the states, regardless of their size and level of development. Although Armenia’s share in the global emissions is not big and doesn’t exceed the two hundredth percentage point, according to the President, the country attaches importance to the necessity of joining the efforts of all the states in this issue. He also noted that as a developing country, Armenia has committed to contribute to the global efforts.

“Armenia’s national stance is reflected in the document called “Actions provided and established on state level”, which has been approved by our government,” the President said.

After mentioning the principles which serve as a basis for the aforementioned documents, Sargsyan noted that Armenia is ready to make a quantitative commitment on limiting the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.

By the end of his speech, the President stressed that the challenge of the climate change –like the recent current global threats -knows neither national boundaries, nor international law and civilization norms.

According to Sargsyan, in the modern correlated and globalized world, the challenge which one country faces belongs to everyone from the collective point of view. Therefore, the solutions should be comprehensive, agreed and combined.
