YEREVAN. - Asia and the Pacific face serious challenges, which significantly hinder their economic cooperation.

President of Armenian Serzh Sargsyan stated the aforementioned at the meeting with the Executive Secretary of the United Nations (UN) Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, Shamshad Akhtar.

The interlocutors discussed a number of issues on the cooperation between Armenia and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.

The President attached importance to the activity of the aforementioned Commission and expressed willingness on behalf of Armenia to develop the cooperation with that institution.

Sargsyan also attached importance to the efforts of the international community towards developing a comprehensive agenda, thanks to which it will be possible to respond to and resist the challenges which Asia and the Pacific face today.

The President assured that Armenia is ready to have its modest participation in this issue. He also attached great importance to the cooperation with the Commission as a good platform for discussions.

 For her part, Shamshad Akhtar agreed with the Armenian President’s assessment of the regional situation, stressing that she is optimistic about the future and is grateful for Armenia’s willingness to cooperate.

She also presented the further plans of the Commission to ensure sustainable growth, as well as the stimulating measures to be taken in that direction, attaching importance to the economic vision and political commitments of the region’s countries.

Apart from this, both sides referred to the regional integration processes and cooperation development.

They also touched on the issues of landlocked countries and the projects implemented by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific in that context.
