The Swedish prosecutor's office announced that it terminates the investigation of the telecommunication company TeliaSonera, suspected of paying bribes in Azerbaijan, reports Reuters, based on the statement of the prosecutor Gunnar Stetler made on May 3.

"With the tools we have at our disposal, we can't prove bribery,” said the prosecutor. According to him, the prosecutor’s office would not be able to prove the intent of TeliaSonera employees.

The investigation was launched after the Swedish television journalists had published materials they received as a result of their journalistic investigation, claiming that TeliaSonera bribed officials to enter the mobile market in Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan . Besides Swedish prosecutor's office, the prosecutor's office of the United States, Norway, Switzerland, and the Netherlands are also working on the verification of the facts the journalists had referred to.

Due to the bribery scandal some of the top managers and members of the company’s Board of Directors resigned; the company got rid of its business assets in Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and other countries of Eurasia . TeliaSonera owns a controlling stake of the largest mobile operator of Azerbaijan, Azercell. Stetler said that the investigation against the company is now only carried out in Uzbekistan.
