Kazakhstan has for the first time been elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Reuters reports.

The country's membership term will start from 1 January 2017 and end in 2018.

138 out of 193 states voted for Kazakhstan’s membership to the UN Security Council.  Kazakhstan and Thailand were both included in the Asia-Pacific group.

Only three of the seven candidate-states received the necessary majority in the first round: Bolivia (Latin American group), Ethiopia (African group) and Sweden (west European group).

Italy and the Netherlands from the same west European group are struggling for the second place at the Security Council table, RIA Novosti reports.
