YEREVAN. – National Assembly (NA) of Armenia President Galust Sahakyan on Thursday met with a delegation led by Luc Carvounas, a member of the French Senate.
Welcoming the guests to the National assembly, Galust Sahakyan emphasized their visit to Armenia on the 25th anniversary of the country’s Independence, the NA informed Armenian News-NEWS.am.
The head of Armenian Parliament expressed gratitude to friendly France for the permanent support in matters that are crucial for Armenia.
Touching upon the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) conflict, Galust Sahakyan highlighted the delegation’s visit to Artsakh. In this context, the NA Speaker highly appreciated the French parliamentarians’ condemning reaction to the large-scale military operations unleashed by Azerbaijan in April.
The NA chairman, condemning the severe terrorist acts in Paris and Nice and in several other places, earlier, assured that Armenia always stands with friendly France .
Considering France’s contribution to the recognition and condemnation of Armenian Genocide to be undeniable, Galust Sahakyan mentioned that the French law on Armenian Genocide recognition, which passed in 2001, will become perfect together with the law on defining accountability for genocide denial. The NA Speaker expressed the hope that, considering French President François Hollande’s commitment, the French parliament will be consistent in submitting and passing the new respective bill.
The head of the Armenian Parliament expressed confidence that Senator Carvounas will continue his efforts to further strengthen and expand cooperation between Armenia and France .
Luc Carvounas, expressing gratitude for the warm reception, congratulated on the 25th anniversary of the Republic of Armenia. He also conveyed French National Assembly President Claude Bartolone’s and head of the France-Armenia Friendship Group Bruno Le Roux’s warm greetings to Galust Sahakyan.
Carvounas, touching upon the events in April, also highlighted their visit to Artsakh and meetings with the NKR President and National Assembly Speaker. He noted that during their talks, they conveyed France’s solidarity with the people of Artsakh, on the events that occurred as a result of Azerbaijan’s violation of the ceasefire. Luc Carvounas noted that he had done his best to present the four-day April war precisely to the French government.
Touching upon the matter of Armenian Genocide recognition, the French parliamentarian stated that they are doing everything to pass the law on criminalizing Armenian Genocide denial.
Several other issues of mutual interest also were discussed at the meeting.
