BRUSSELS. - NATO did not recognize the results of the presidential election in South Ossetia, said   Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Monday.

According to BBC News, Rasmussen said South Ossetia is Georgian territory, and the Alliance recognizes no a priori independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, nor the results of elections there.

"The holding of elections in South Ossetia is not conducive to a peaceful and lasting settlement of the situation in Georgia. The Alliance reaffirms its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders," reported ITAR-TASS quoting Rasmussen’s statement.

UNIAN reports that the spokesman for the EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy spoke about the issue in the same vein, stressing that the European Union does not recognize the constitutional and legal framework in which these elections took place.

"The European Union reiterates its support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia in accordance with international law," said the statement.

Recently presidential elections were held in South Ossetia. Ex-Minister of Education Alla Dzhioeva and Minister of Emergency Situations Anatoly Bibilov will go for second round.
