According to U.S. and Israeli officials, during a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump said that Israel should begin withdrawing its troops from Syria and urged him to do the same in Lebanon. Axios reports.

Three months before elections that are crucial for his political survival and personal freedom, Netanyahu is unlikely to take any significant steps to withdraw Israeli troops from the territory they occupy in Syria or to limit further troop deployment in Lebanon beyond what has already been agreed.

However, Trump’s requests increase the pressure on the Israeli leader. At present, the Israeli army occupies significant areas of southern Lebanon and southern Syria.

A U.S. official said that Trump told Netanyahu that the presence of Israeli forces in Syrian territory is creating tensions and could lead to escalation.

“They don’t want to see you there. You should redeploy,” Trump told Netanyahu, according to the U.S. official, who added that the same applies to Lebanon.

“The prime minister, for his part, raised the issue of the need to create security zones along Israel’s borders,” the statement from the Israeli prime minister’s office said.

The phone call between Trump and Netanyahu took place the day after the U.S. president met with his Syrian counterpart Ahmad al-Sharaa on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Turkey.
