Nearly 1,400 people have died and another 4,000 are missing after flash floods hit Nepal on August 26, EFE news agency reported on Tuesday.

Its sources say that due to the scale of the disaster, many casualties were buried before their identities could be confirmed.

So far, only 103 people have been buried after their identities were confirmed.

To ensure more accurate identification, Nepal is taking DNA samples from both the bodies of the dead and relatives of the missing.

More than 4,000 people, 610 of whom are foreigners, have not been contacted since the floods.

The flash floods were the result of a high-altitude glacier collapse in Nepal. The massive avalanche of ice, rocks, and mud also affected the border region of China, where, according to Chinese authorities, 43 people have died and 519 are missing—of whom 261 are citizens of 23 countries.
