YEREVAN. – Armenia’s Road Police have recorded 300,000 traffic violations ever since January 16, 2012, when speed detectors and video cameras began to be installed on the country’s roads, Deputy Police Chief Arthur Osikyan said during a briefing with news reporters.   

At present, 45 speed detectors and 25 video cameras are mounted throughout the country. All video cameras are installed at capital city Yerevan intersections, whereas the speed detectors—aside from Yerevan—are also set up on Yerevan-Sevan and Yerevan-Ashtarak highways.   

As per Osikyan, these devices prevent traffic accidents and violations, and, also, they should minimize contact between the drivers and the road police. Specifically, although the recorded traffic violations have increased rapidly, fatal accidents have reduced as compared with the year past.  

“If there is a speed detector and [, also,] a road police anywhere, those police have violated the respective instructions,” the Deputy Police Chief noted.
