YEREVAN.- Armenian parliament’s standing committee on state and legal affairs is debating on Wednesday the draft bill on  a new ad hoc committee on March 1 events.

The draft bill submitted by the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) bloc offers to create a committee to deal with holding investigation into violence and illegal actions of the policemen.

The previous ad hoc committee was headed by Samvel Nikoyan. The ANC rapporteur Gagik Jahangiryan says the new committee will considerably differ from the previous one.

ANC notes that the Armenian government offered compensation to the owners of shops affected during the events but paid nothing to the relatives of 10 victims and one hundred injured.

The relatives of March 1 victims are also participating in the debate.   

Armenian opposition did not recognize official results of the presidential election held on February 19, 2008. Leader of the opposition Levon Ter-Petrosyan organized rallies in the Liberty Square, in the center of Yerevan, which lasted until March when thousands took to the streets demanding that official election results should be canceled. Ten people died as a result of confrontation.
