YEREVAN. – Serzh Sargsyan's efforts lead Armenian-Turkish relations to a deadlock, member of the opposition ANC party said.

Despite the fact that in 2009 “adventurism of Sargsyan turned into state propaganda machine” the members of which were advocates of the Armenian-Turkish commission of historians, Armenia gained nothing, Karapetyan said.

He believes Turkey and Azerbaijan gained advantage of this situation, just as other countries that benefit from the closed borders.

“This impasse is Serzh Sargsyan's gift to our enemies, and those who praised the initiative in 2009-2011 should be held accountable. Rather than to take clear and understandable steps to normalize the Armenian-Turkish relations, a hopeless program was chosen, and the entire system was involved in the implementation of the wrong policy,” Karapetyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

In October 2009 Armenia and Turkey signed protocols in Zurich to normalize diplomatic relations between the states. The documents had to be ratified in both countries’ parliaments. However, in 2010 the Armenian president suspended the process due to Turkey’s non-constructive stance. Ankara set preconditions and linked the reconciliation process to resolution of the Karabakh conflict. Finally Turkey decided to remove the protocols from parliament’s agenda.
