YEREVAN. – The challenges in the Armenia-European Union (EU) agreement talks are linked to Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia, Ambassador Piotr Świtalski, noted about the above-said at a press conference on Tuesday.

In his words, however, Armenia’s parliamentary election in April will not hamper Armenia-EU talks, since the European Union is not constrained by the developments on the domestic political calendar of Armenia. 

Świtalski stated that the progress in Armenia-EU talks is impressive, and the respective challenges requiring solutions are quite limited.

When asked what prevents the immediate signing of the new Armenia-EU framework agreement, Ambassador Świtalski responded that the pace of the respective negotiations was very high for EU standards.

He stressed that these challenges emerged after 2013, when Armenia chose the path of EAEU accession, and therefore the EU Association Agreement negotiations were suspended.

The EU diplomat added, however, that these challenges are associated with certain other developments as well.

Piotr Świtalski concluded that we need to avoid the acceleration of the Armenia-EU talks, since there are issues that need to be reflected on.
