YEREVAN. – The resumption of war in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) will be disastrous for all parties.

Olesya Vartanyan, one of the persons behind the latest report by the International Crisis Group (Crisis Group), stated the aforesaid at a discussion on Wednesday.

She highlighted three main points that were focused on when preparing this report. First, during her first visit to Artsakh last fall, it became apparent for her that the status quo is beneficial to no one. Second, as per Vartanyan, nobody needs a large-scale war, and the authorities of the conflicting parties realize that it is destructive and will result in a large number of casualties. And third, even though the parties want to avoid war, the mechanisms that could prevent incidents and tension are absent along the line of contact between the conflicting parties.

In her words, the situation which may escalate, and the reasons which led to the four-day war in April 2016 are not eliminated.

“[But] the biggest threat is the lack of contact between the parties,” the Crisis Group representative added.
