YEREVAN. – Turkey will not interfere in the Karabakh conflict solely for the sake of Azerbaijan, said political analyst Styopa Safaryan, at a discussion on Wednesday.

When asked about the likelihood of third parties’ intervention in the conflict if the Karabakh war were to resume, Safaryan recalled that Azerbaijan had fired no shots toward Armenia’s border during the four-day war, which Azerbaijan had unleashed against Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) in April of the year past.

“This speaks to the fact that Azerbaijan clearly understands the consequences of an aggression against Armenia,” he added.

As for the chances of Turkey’s intervention in the Karabakh conflict, the analyst noted that Karabakh is not the Middle East, and therefore it does not have the same importance to Turkey as does Syria.

“Turkey is Azerbaijan’s ally,” Styopa Safaryan maintained. “But I don’t think Ankara will jeopardize its strategic interests and get involved in the conflict for its [Azerbaijan] sake, especially against the backdrop of the normalizing of relations with Russia.”
