YEREVAN. – In older times, New Year celebration table was full of grains and not meat, ethnographer Hranush Kharatyan told the journalists on Monday adding that granular and leguminous products symbolized dying and resurrecting life and nature in past.

The ethnographer advised to celebrate the New Year with honey, which symbolizes a sweet year. According to her, it is necessary to enter home on the right foot and with something in the hands. She believes that the shift of the New Year is conditioned by the Genocide [in 1915] and October Revolution [in 1917], which cut the evolution of development between historic past and present.

“If we try to involve the tradition into our lives mechanically, we will face contradiction with the present ideas facing other cultural values. It is better to find an optimal way,” Kharatyan said adding that New Year has also undergone calendar changes.

New Year Eve on January 1st is celebrated after the October Revolution.
