YEREVAN.- Syria is surprised at Turkey’s stance, Charge d’Affaires of Syria in Armenia Mamun Hariri told journalists on Wednesday.

According to him, historically relations between Syria and Turkey could be characterized as tensed and negative.

Since Justice and Development Party led by Premier Erdogan came to power and “zero problems with neighbors” policy was proclaimed, the relationship has been changing somehow.

Held high-level visits were made and over 50 agreements were signed, the countries created a strategic council. The length of the borders between Syria and Turkey is about 900 km on each, the diplomat said adding that relatives are living on both sides.

“Given all this, Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad responded to Erdogan’s calls and found it a good occasion to open a new chapter in relations. However, Syria is at least surprised at Turkey’s behavior, in particular the fact that Turkey has granted asylum to Syrian opposition and some terrorists,” the diplomat said.

According to him, Turkey is at war in the south-eastern parts of the country and should solve local problems prior to giving advice.

Asked about Turkey’s goals, Mamun Hariri said that having achieved power, Erdogan tried to play with the feelings of the Arab people, it  was proved in connection with sending the “Liberty Flotilla” fleet.

Hariri also pointed out Turkey’s changeable position on Libya adding that Turkey finally determined its stance when it became clear that Gadaffi’s end is near.

“We hoped for sincerity of Turkey’s position, but it has retreated principles. I do not think that our relationship can easily return to the one we used to have,” he said.
