YEREVAN. – All figures of the Armenian opposition Free Democrats Party have always stated that they are in favor of one-hundred-percent proportional election system, since the majority election system is a mechanism for rigging the elections, Free Democrats Party member, former FM Alexander Arzumanyan said during a press conference on Wednesday.    

In his turn, the ruling coalition’s Republican Party of Armenia MP Artak Davtyan noted that they favor a mixed election system. “What’s most important for us is that when a transition is being made toward a one-hundred-percent proportional, this causes a political party obsession. The one-hundred-percent proportional election system is not the best one for us. I believe the most acceptable is the relative majority [election system], which functions in US, for example,” Davtyan maintained.           

And Alexander Arzumanyan noted: “In non-established, undemocratic countries like ours, the authority tries to reproduce [itself]. [And] One of the mechanisms for this is the majority election system. In the case of majority election system, the opposition’s victory is ruled out because, when the [number of ] 41 oligarchs increase, the opposition cannot win, even if it garners seventy percent [of the votes].”
