Oil prices spiked 13% after Israel launched a series of strikes against Iran. This raised fears of a major war in the region, which accounts for a third of the world's crude oil production, Bloomberg reported.
Brent surpassed 78 dollars per barrel. The jump was the biggest intraday rise since March 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine. Prices then retreated to $75.
Gold rose as investors rushed into safe havens, rising 1.4 percent to $3,500 an ounce, close to a record.
