Unidentified individuals threw pig heads at the doors of several mosques in Paris Monday evening, BFMTV reports.

The French capital's police chief, Laurent Nunez, announced that pig heads were found in front of several Paris mosques Tuesday morning.

"An investigation has been launched immediately. Everything necessary is being done to find the perpetrators of these disgusting acts," he added.

At least one pig's head had the word "Macron" written on it.

A preliminary examination of the video footage from the cameras shows that in one case the pig's head was brought by a man of European appearance.

French interior minister Bruno Retailleau called the incidents a "disgusting provocation," and expressed support for French Muslims.
