On November 23-24, in Geneva, the UN Committee against Torture at the 59th session discussed Armenia’s 4th Report on implementation of the UN Convention against degrading treatment or punishment, MFA press office informed NEWS.am.

The Armenian delegation headed the Deputy Minister of Justice Artak Asatryan. The delegation involved ministries of Justice and Foreign Affairs, representative of the Police, Special Investigation Service, as well as representatives of the Armenian Permanent Mission to UN.

The monitoring of the report took place in an open and constructive atmosphere of dialogue with the Committee members, during which they discussed implementation of the rights enshrined in the Convention. The Committee positively assessed the fact of submitting the 4th reports earlier than required.

Answering to the questions of Committee members, the Armenian delegation introduced positive developments in the last four years in that area, as well as current programs and steps taken to align the sector with international commitments. In particular, the delegation pinpointed to the legislative package adopted in June 2015, as a result of which the Criminal Code was aligned with definition of the Convention’s first article, as well as detailed discussions were provided on criminal cases.

The Committee members also informed about Azerbaijan’s violation of international humanitarian law on April due to unleased large-scale military actions, torture, and killings of civilians.
