At least six people were killed and 16 more were injured as a result of a powerful earthquake that struck the southern Philippines, SCMP reported quoting AFP.

Earlier it was reported that the quake with a magnitude of 6.5 roused residents from sleep in Surigao del Norte province, sending hundreds to flee their homes.

The quake was centered about 14 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital of Surigao at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Many buildings, including schools were totally or partially destroyed, a bridge collapsed. The airport is temporarily closed because of cracks on the runway.
