The German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel has urged Europe to become more independent from the US. " The partnership with the US and NATO is the basis of the North Atlantic community. However, the European Union must be able to independently solve crises and conflicts within its borders, "he wrote in his article published in  Rheinische Post.

Gabriel also stressed that the EU "needs strong external borders." According to him, it is important "in the times when there are crisis and migration flows at the borders." He believes, that the EU must become better in the fight against terrorism and internal security.
