YEREVAN. – Armenia became a member of the Eurasian Economic Union with a belief that “our economy will get freedom and will develop, having all four freedoms for the sake of which this organization was created,”  President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan said in an interview to Mir TV.

“We have become part of a very large market, this gives Armenia an opportunity to export more. In 2015 and 2016, we had almost 20 percent in exports growth. For us, this is exports, and for the general consumer market these are goods and services. I think that the goals that we set ourselves are realistic, despite the fact that the creation of the Eurasian Union coincided with the negative processes in the world economy. This made it difficult for our citizens to feel the benefits of joining the Eurasian Economic Union,” President said.

However, the Armenian leader is convinced that if this union had not been created, Armenia would have experienced much more problems than it has now.

“I am confident that this union has great prospects. We are in favor of eliminating all existing obstacles as soon as possible,” President said, adding that the Armenians would once feel that this was a right decision.

Asked whether one can describe the problems existing within the Union as contradictions,  Sargsyan noted that it is too early to say whether these are contradictions or the matters that the member states are willing to solve.

He emphasized that creation of an organization requires great efforts and, most importantly, time.

“It is very important that the members of the union be interested in the development. Here, I think, Yerevan has a special responsibility, because the representatives of Armenia are chairmen of the Commission [Eurasian Economic Commission – ed.], and much depends on its precise work. We are very interested in the advancement of the Eurasian Union,” President resumed.
