The voting on the referendum on Catalonia’s independence from Spain has begun, reported The Associated Press (AP).  

But many voters came to election precincts several hours before they were opened, so as not to allow the police to close them under the order of Madrid authorities.

Earlier, a Catalonian government representative called on Catalans to vote in any open polling station.

Police, however, have already begun closing some election precincts.
