Parliament of Maldives extended the state of emergency for 30 days. The state of emergency was declared by the President to strengthen his power after the Supreme Court ordered the release of imprisoned political opponents, AP reported.

The two-week state of emergency declared by President Yameen Abdul Gayoom was to expire on Tuesday, but he asked the legislature to extend it.

In accordance with the law on state of emergency, two judges of the Supreme Court were arrested on charges of corruption, while the remaining three judges annulled the decision to release Yemen's opponents.
