In all likelihood, the holding of snap presidential elections in Azerbaijan is due to some major circumstances about which Baku prefers not to speak, Russian analyst Stanislav Tarasov told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

In his view, the arguments, which the Azerbaijani authorities present as reasons for conducting this presidential election ahead of schedule, are not valid and do not withstand any criticism.

At the same time, according to Tarasov, several Azerbaijani analysts, who believe that the forthcoming early presidential election may be linked to some unexpected circumstances whose cause is either internal emergency situations or disasters, are more convincing.

In addition, as per the Russian analyst, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev senses a favorable situation for himself, since a situation is developing in which he can hold the presidential election with his own scenario and record the absolute support of the country’s population.

“Aliyev made a historically rather non-standard statement about the Azerbaijanis’ ‘return’ to [Armenia’s] Yerevan, Zangezur and other regions, which is also an apparent attempt to increase the enthusiasm whereby, ultimately, he shall win in the snap elections,” Stanislav Tarasov concluded.

The early presidential election in Azerbaijan is slated for April 11.
