YEREVAN. – There are problems and obstacles in relation to the Alaverdi copper smelting plant, head of acting Deputy PM’s office Varag Siseryan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

The fate of the Alaverdi plant is still uncertain, the government’s talks with Valex company and VTB Bank yield no results. Siseryan said they cannot force any of the parties and they are acting as an intermediary.

“There are problems, difficulties, because this is a very big topic, there are proposals, changes on both sides, nothing depends on us. It is necessary to study everything in detail so that there will be no problems in the future,” the official said, adding that whatever solution is found, it would be temporary anyway.

As reported earlier, Alaverdi copper-smelting plant faced serious financial problems. The company officially suspended its activities on October 19.

The plant is reportedly owned by VTB Bank - Armenia. Over 600 workers who were threatened to be dismissed have already held protest actions.
