The US granted Iraq a 90-day waiver from sanctions against Iran in order to allow it to continue to import electricity from Tehran, NDTV reported.

Iraq’s energy sector is in critical condition as it does not produce enough electricity to meet domestic demand. The US sanctions on Iran, threaten to deprive the country of its main Iranian supplier.

Earlier, it gave Iraq a 45-day waiver to continue buying electricity and natural gas to generate it from its eastern neighbour.

US Department of State told AP that US has granted Iraq a 90-day extension.

Eight other countries, including China, India and Japan, received 6-month benefits in order to reduce energy imports from Iran.
