Belgium started to fulfill its mandate as a new non-permanent member of the UN Security Council from Tuesday, RIA Novosti reported.

According to the MFA press release of,  together with other members of the Security Council and all concerned parties, over the next two years, Belgium will be a constructive, reliable and open partner in the searc  of collective responses to international issues of peace and security.

According to the Belgian FM Didier Reynders, Brussels will pay special attention to the prevention of armed conflicts, protecting the rights of victims of such conflicts and effective operational management of UN peacekeeping missions.

The new members on the 15-seat council include Germany, South Africa, Indonesia, Belgium and the Dominican Republic.
