The supporters of second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan ended their protest near the Yerevan court of general jurisdiction in Shengavit District and promised to return tomorrow.

“Since we were told that Judge Anna Danibekyan is currently in session and since we want the media to know about our demand, we will return tomorrow morning and address our request and demand to the judge,” Gagik Baghdasaryan, one of the supporters, said during the protest.

Earlier, Kocharyan’s supporters had held a protest near the Yerevan court of general jurisdiction in Kentron and Nork Marash Districts with the demand for Kocharyan’s release.

On September 4, the Constitutional Court of Armenia partially granted the application of second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan, recognizing part 2 of Article 35 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Armenia as contradicting the Constitution and invalid. Thus, the Court recorded that there is no regulation related to immunity among the circumstances excluding criminal prosecution referred to in part 2 of Article 35, which is unconstitutional.

Today, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Armenia issued a statement in response to the decision of the Constitutional Court, stating that there are no grounds for terminating criminal prosecution instituted against Robert Kocharyan by virtue of the decision of the Constitutional Court and releasing Robert Kocharyan.

The trial over the case of second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan (charged with overthrow of constitutional order) and other ex-officials in the case of the events of March 1, 2008 is set to take place on September 12. The case has been inscribed to Judge Anna Danibekyan of the Yerevan court of general jurisdiction.
