Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan today received OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Harlem Désir, reports the news service of the Government of Armenia.

The Prime Minister welcomed Désir’s visit to Armenia and his participation in the international conference dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the institution of the Ombudsman in Armenia. Nikol Pashinyan reaffirmed the Armenian government’s commitment to protecting human rights and the right to freedom of speech, touched upon freedom of speech on the Internet in Armenia and stated that Armenia is in 8th place in the world with that indicator.

Harlem Désir expressed satisfaction with his participation in the international conference dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the institution of the Ombudsman in Armenia and attached importance to the cooperation with the Armenian government and the relevant government agencies.

The interlocutors touched upon the current challenges at the local, regional and global levels and, in this context, exchanged views on the situation concerning fake news and hate speech. The Prime Minister talked about last week’s reciprocal visits of journalists of Armenia, Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan that can serve for establishing mutual confidence and reducing hate speech, and the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media welcomed the initiative and attached importance to its continuity.

The Prime Minister attached importance to the cooperation with the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media in order to make progress in freedom of speech and media in Armenia.
