YEREVAN. – We are more than satisfied with Davit Khajakyan's work, and he has shown with his work how the council of elders should work. Edmon Marukyan, the leader of the opposition Bright Armenia party and the head of its parliamentary faction, said this at a press conference today.

"But at the same time there are situations that are out of Mr. Khajakyan's influence, but he bears accountability for that," he added, referring to the fact that the Bright Armenia party is discussing recalling Khajakyan, the head of the opposition Luys faction at the Yerevan Council of Elders, from the latter. “This accountability also extends to the Bright Armenia party.

In fact, Bright Armenia is blamed for not specifically the activities of our members. How much can we explain? This is a serious problem for us. We think, perhaps we should not participate so that we do not become a target.”

Asked whether such an approach is linked to possible pressure from the authorities, Marukyan responded: "Davit Khajakyan has found fraud in the work of the municipality, but there is no coverage of that. (…). If a member of the Council of Elders ‘chews’ and puts the official fraud in the ‘mouth’ of the prosecutor's office and it is not covered, then it is better that we do not participate and get out. The media cover some scandalous things, but not the real action. If our job is getting lost, people don't see it, should we continue to be there? If we see that we are not able to bring the faction to the content field, we better get out."

He added that when the party's governing board makes a decision, they will report it. "Davit Khajakyan is ready to carry out the decision that the board will make," Marukyan added. "Davit Khajakyan may be a mayoral candidate in the future, he may be an MP."
