Russia is not moving towards the closure of the Internet and is not going to do it, and the concepts of free and sovereign Internet do not contradict each other, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

His remarks came at the press conference on Thursday, RIA Novosti reported.

'Free' and 'sovereign' Internet are concepts that do not contradict each other, because that law is aimed only at one thing - to prevent negative consequences with the possible disconnection of the global network, the management of which is largely located abroad, Putin said addinf that that's "what we are talking about, this is sovereignty - that we have our own resources that can be included, and that the Internet is not cut off from us. The meaning of this law is just this, and therefore there are no restrictions."

“We are not moving towards the closure of the Internet and are not going to do this,” the president said.
