I believe the constitutional amendments had to be made much more quickly, and I apologize to citizens of Armenia for not solving the crisis in the judiciary for such a long time. This is what Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Alen Simonyan told reporters today, touching upon the criticism that the initiative for amendments to the Constitution through the National Assembly is unconstitutional and even overthrow of the constitutional order.

“Those people are furious due to the recent court decisions, but I would also like to assure that our political party will implement what the people have given us the mandate to implement and will implement it as soon as possible,” he said.

The bill on constitutional amendments proposes to discontinue the powers of the judges of the Constitutional Court having served for more than 12 years, and the term of office of the president of the Constitutional Court is discontinued, meaning the president of the Constitutional Court will be elected through a new procedure. There are 3 judges of the Constitutional Court who have been serving for over 12 years, and Hrayr Tovmasyan has been serving for only two years, and consequently, he will remain a member of the Constitutional Court.
