Fruit jelly, jams, and preserves from Germany and France will be subject to additional customs tariffs when imported into the US, starting September 1.

They will replace cheeses from Greece and biscuits from the UK in the list of goods and services. The total volume of goods subject to punitive duties will remain unchanged at $ 7.5 billion per year, DW reported referring to a statement by the Office of the US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.

As noted in the document, the size of the tariffs remains the same: 15 percent for aircraft and 25 percent for other goods.

The trade conflict between the EU countries and the US arose because of the illegal, as it seemed to the parties, subsidies of aircraft manufacturers. As a result, complaints about the legality of subsidies received by Boeing from the US and Airbus from the EU were sent to the World Trade Organization (WTO) on one day - October 6, 2004. In May 2018, the WTO recognized EU subsidies for Airbus as infringing on Boeing's interests, and the US then immediately threatened the EU with penalties. In March 2019, the WTO sided with the EU, claiming that the US was providing illegal financial support to Boeing.

Nevertheless, on October 2, the WTO officially allowed the US authorities to impose penalties on European products. The decision stated that tariffs could reach 100 percent, and the total amount of goods taxed by them would amount to $ 7.5 billion annually. The US decided at that time to limit itself to an additional 10 percent tax on the import of civil aircraft from the EU. Besides, penalty duties were introduced on a number of agricultural and other goods at a rate of 25 percent. In particular, they touched on books, tools, textiles, coffee, wine, cheese, olive oil, and shells from Europe. First of all, France, Germany, Spain, and the UK fell under the sanctions, that is, the countries that Washington accuses of subsidizing the aircraft manufacturer Airbus.
