South Africa has been hit by flooding that has killed more than 70 people in the region as a result of Tropical Storm Ana, BBC reported.

At least 48 people have died in Madagascar and 130,000 have been forced to flee their homes.

At least 11 people have died in Malawi. There was a power outage across the country, and some areas were declared disaster zones.

Meanwhile, Mozambique has reported 18 deaths.

But officials say the true death toll is still unknown: 20,000 people were affected by the floods.

In Mozambique, Ana destroyed 10,000 homes and dozens of schools and hospitals, and damaged power lines. Heavy rain and thunderstorms continued to hit some regions even after the storm passed, contributing to the flooding.

Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario said his country did not ask for help, but the problem is bigger than any country's ability to solve it.

He spoke about an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.

He called for international assistance, and UNICEF said it was sending staff to the country to help 45,000 people it estimated were in need of humanitarian assistance.
