MEPs demand a complete embargo on Russian imports of oil, coal, nuclear fuel and gas, the European Parliament said in a statement.

In a resolution passed on Thursday by 513 votes to 22 with 19 abstentions, MEPs call for additional punitive measures against Russia, including an immediate total embargo on Russian imports of oil, coal, nuclear fuel and gas, the statement said.

This should be accompanied by a plan to ensure the security of the EU energy supply, as well as a strategy to lift sanctions if Russia takes steps to restore the independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders and completely withdraws its troops from the territory of Ukraine.

The resolution of the European Parliament also contains a demand to exclude Russia from the G20 and other multilateral organizations.

Existing sanctions must be fully and effectively implemented throughout the EU and by the EU's international allies as a matter of priority, MEPs insist. They call on EU leaders to exclude Russia from the G20 and other multilateral organizations such as the UNHRC, Interpol, the World Trade Organization, UNESCO and others, which would be an important sign that the international community will not return to its usual relationship with an aggressor state.

To make the sanctions more effective, the Parliament calls for the exclusion of Russian banks from the SWIFT system, the prohibition of all ships associated with Russia from entering EU territorial waters and mooring in EU ports, and a ban on road freight transport from Russia and Belarus. MEPs also demand the arrest of all assets belonging to Russian officials or oligarchs associated with the Putin regime, their proxies and straw people, as well as assets in Belarus associated with the Lukashenka regime.

Pointing to Belarus' involvement in the war in Ukraine, the resolution requires that the sanctions against Belarus be a mirror image of the sanctions imposed against Russia in order to close any loopholes allowing Putin to use Lukashenka's help to circumvent the sanctions, the document says. The resolution also noted the need to continue and increase the supply of arms.

MEPs refer to the shocking atrocities, which are undoubtedly war crimes, committed by Russian troops in Ukraine, in particular in Bucha, and the complete or near-total destruction of Mariupol, Volnovakha and other towns and villages (paragraphs C and D). They noted that those responsible for war crimes must be held accountable and call for the creation of a special UN tribunal for crimes in Ukraine.
