The United States has revealed a new strategy for the Arctic that calls for increased competition with Russia and China.

“We will exercise U.S. government presence in the Arctic region as required to protect the American people and defend our sovereign territory,” the White House said in a new strategy announcement.

The new U.S. strategy, an update of a previous 2013 strategy, says the United States seeks to create an Arctic region that is peaceful, stable, prosperous and cooperative.

The strategy also takes into account increasing strategic competition in the Arctic, exacerbated by Russia's unprovoked war in Ukraine and the People's Republic of China's growing influence in the region, and seeks to ensure that the United States can compete effectively and manage tensions, the White House said.

The United States will deter threats to the United States and our allies by enhancing the capabilities necessary to defend our interests in the Arctic, while coordinating common security approaches with allies and partners and reducing the risks of unintended escalation, the statement added.
