America will never impose sanctions against Baku, because Azerbaijan is no less important country for the U.S. than Armenia, if not more important, international market expert Suren Sargsyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

"Don't forget the State Minister's statement that in case of a military conflict between Iran and Azerbaijan, the U.S. will support Baku. That is, Azerbaijan is seen as one of the best ways to involve Iran in military actions. This is just one component of the big game. So they will not use sanctions against Azerbaijan. By the way, there were sanctions against Azerbaijan, resolution 907 was in effect for 10 years, which was just a sanction in the part of Nagorno-Karabakh as well.

"The U.S. provides only security assistance to Azerbaijan. That is, it is not military assistance, but assistance in terms of security. The purpose is to protect the maritime border with Iran. The U.S. has provided $100 million assistance to Azerbaijan over the past two or three years, and it has been provided not against Armenia but against Iran," Sargsyan said.

He also noted that the U.S. has very serious diplomatic tools that can be applied before sanctions are imposed. "The U.S. has not yet exhausted these tools, and the likelihood that any sanctions will be applied against Azerbaijan is practically zero," the expert concluded.
