BuzzFeed, a major U.S. online publication specializing in news and viral content, has announced the use of a neural network ChatGPT as the author of some materials, The Telegraph reported.

The business publication noted that the change in editorial policy was announced after BuzzFeed fired 180 journalists who made up 12% of the company's total staff. Officially, the layoffs were motivated by a deteriorating economic outlook.

BuzzFeed CEO Jonah H. Peretti said that ChatGPT would start by writing texts for personalized tests and quizzes. However, in the future, Peretti intends to entrust the neural network to create full-fledged editorial materials, too.

The head of BuzzFeed assured readers and investors that despite the hiring of ChatGPT, the media will continue to focus on the journalistic materials created by humans.

According to Business Insider, BuzzFeed's stock rose over 200% in 24 hours as artificial intelligence was involved in the writing of articles.
