The pulling out of Russian border guards from Zvartnots airport is a decided topic for Armenia, I don't think there is a need to discuss it. Speaker of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia, Alen Simonyan, stated this speaking with reporters in the NA Wednesday.

"An attempt is being made to view it in the logic of [Armenia] withdrawing from the interstate agreement. But it was actually an interdepartmental agreement, the purpose of which was to help the Armenian border guards in that area to lighten that burden. There is no need to lighten that burden anymore," said Simonyan, adding that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan statement that there will be no more Russian border guards at Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport as of August 1 is valid.

"We [i.e. Armenia] informed, we said [to Russia]: ‘Brother, thank you for your help, we appreciate it.’ I also thank [Russia], but Armenia no longer needs that help. We can serve our airport ourselves, and our border guards also can fulfill the task put before them.

Now they are saying different things, they are saying, ‘Well, who will guard the border of Turkey?’ I have a very strong doubt that if Turkey decides to attack Armenia, the Russian border guards will be able to or will act to protect it," said Simonyan.

And when asked whether in the near future Armenia could decide that there should not be Russian border guards on the Armenian-Turkish border either, the Armenian parliament speaker responded: "No. There was no such conversation; this is not that case."
