YEREVAN. - Putting the bill on the Legal Regime of the State of Emergency to vote on March 1 is like sacrilege, the Armenian opposition Free Democrats Party member and former FM Alexander Arzumanyan said during a press conference on Thursday. He added that the parliamentary and the non-parliamentary opposition, alike, are against this draft law.

As per Arzumanyan, this is the authorities’ directive to the society, prior to the elections, and its concern is the army’s involvement in domestic politics.

In his turn, the ruling coalition’s Republican Party of Armenia MP Mkrtich Minasyan noted that the restraint mechanism needs to eventually function, and if there is any unconstitutional provision, it can be corrected by way of the Constitutional Court.

Minasyan also stated that their objective is to guarantee the country’s security.

He assured that the bill on the Legal Regime of the State of Emergency is not at all a directive to the society, prior to the elections, since they are prepared to secure more fair and transparent elections.

And reflecting on the tragic events that occurred in the capital Yerevan on March 1, 2008, the ruling party’s member stated that, prior to March 1, a segment of the public was made prepared for carrying out enmity and violations.
